DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina American Indian Heritage Commission (AIHC) i
nvites you to a special American Indian Heritage Month lecture with Dr. Se
th B. Grooms\, citizen of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.\n\nDr. Groom
s is an anthropological archaeologist whose work centers on crafting archa
eological narratives of Native histories that are informed by Indigenous p
erspectives. His research bridges geoarchaeology\, landscape archaeology\,
and chronological modeling with frameworks grounded in both traditional a
nthropological theory and Native philosophies and epistemologies developed
by contemporary Native intellectuals.\n\nHis most recent projects focus o
n the Poverty Point phenomenon (ca. 4500–3000 cal yr BP) in Mississippi
and Louisiana\, where he examines how landscape modification and mound bui
lding shaped early social and ceremonial life in the Southeast.\n\nThis pr
ogram offers an opportunity to explore how archaeology—when approached t
hrough an American Indian lens—can deepen our understanding of cultural
heritage\, landscape\, and identity. The event aligns with the AIHC’s mi
ssion to promote a thorough understanding of American Indian history\, art
s\, customs\, and culture across North Carolina.\n\nThe lecture is free an
d open to all DNCR employees and partners\, both in person and virtually a
 t https://www.youtube.com/live/aB7_7mbGgro?si=J7KNJYPSqdNLsyEr.
