Author Talk: Marcia Phillips — The Regulator Movement in North Carolina Free Admission
Join historian, author, and preservationist Marcia Phillips for an engaging exploration of North Carolina’s overlooked early freedom fighters—the Regulators. In this compelling talk, Phillips uncovers how backcountry settlers in the 1760s and early 1770s rose up against corrupt colonial leadership, unjust taxation, and an unequal legal system—years before the outbreak of the American Revolution.
While much of the Revolution’s story centers on cities like Boston and Philadelphia, this program highlights the critical role of the southern colonies and the Carolinian frontier. Through vivid storytelling and historical insight, Phillips connects the Regulator movement to the broader struggle for independence, showing how it helped shape revolutionary thought, deepen divisions between Loyalists and Patriots, and influence the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War.
This program offers a deeper understanding of how the fight for American liberty began not only in the North, but in the hills and backcountry of pre-Revolutionary North Carolina.
A book sale and signing will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be provided.
