**Attending teachers will receive a FREE copy of Sarah Keys Evans: The Power of Quiet Courage , written by Amy Nathan with illustrations by Jermaine Powell**

K-12 teachers are invited to join the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources (DNCR) for a virtual conversation about a less-known North Carolina trailblazer, Sarah Keys Evans. In 1952, as a young Black Army private returning home to Washington, NC, she refused to give up her seat on an interstate bus stopped in Roanoke Rapids, NC, leading to a landmark case that helped end segregation in interstate travel. Her courageous stand (three years before Rosa Parks) helped pave the way for civil rights.

During the virtual event, will be have a conversation by Amy Nathan, author of DNCR’s new children’s book Sarah Keys Evans: The Power of Quiet Courage, as we explore why Mrs. Evan’s story matters. We’ll also be joined by Christie Norris, Director of Education for DNCR, and Alex Brown, Director of Programs and Audience Engagement for DNCR’s NC Museum of Art - Winston Salem, to explore ways to bring this powerful history, story, and its accompanying art into your classroom.

Teachers who attend for the full-hour event on Feb. 19 will be mailed a FREE copy of the book after the event. An accompanying lesson plan will also be shared. CEUs (.1) are also available upon request for attendees.

Who Should Attend?
Any K-12 teacher (public, private or charter) in North Carolina! While Sarah Keys Evans: The Power of Quiet Courage is written for grades 4 – 5, the book can be utilized in most any grade – and every North Carolina student should know the story of Sarah Keys Evans. The stunning illustrations by Jermaine Powell also provide ample classroom connections for any grade.
