What is the National Civics Bee?  It's like the Spelling Bee but about civics education. All NC Middle Schoolers are eligible to participate, and students progress from an essay contest to a regional, state and national contests. Student winners are awarded $$ and the winner of the National Bee wins $100,000 for their 529 Education Fund. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oykg52IHtys

Who: All Middle School youth in North Carolina are eligible for the Civics Bee Essay Contest. 

 

What: The National Civics Bee is like the Spelling Bee but about civics education. All NC Middle Schoolers are eligible to participate, and students progress from an essay contest to a regional, state and national contests.

 

How: Middle Schoolers must submit an Essay to enter the Civics Bee. This Essay Application Guide is a step-by-step guide to support the essay writing process. 

 

Where: Essays should be submitted through this Portal.

 

When: Middle Schoolers should submit their essay by February 17, 2026. The Essay Portal will close by February 17th 11:59pm Hawaii Standard Time / 3:59 am on February 18th in NC!

 

🏆The Prizes: Student winners are awarded $$ and the winner of the National Bee wins $100,000 for their 529 Education Fund. Our North Carolina state winner will win $1000, and 2nd and 3rd place win prizes too!
