This session will be led by Dr. Shafantae Desinord, the Education and Interpretation Specialist for the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission. The session will offer in-depth insights into the role of North Carolina leaders who stood on the front lines not only to push for institutions where African Americans could attend and receive an education but also to play a major role in school desegregation in North Carolina and nationally. Primary source materials from leaders such as Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, Dorothy Counts, Dr. John Hope Franklin, Pauli Murray, Julius Chambers, and Floyd McKissick will be analyzed during the session.
