Here's an opportunity to learn about a part of our history you may not have known. Join the New Bern Historical on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2pm at Orringer Auditorium at Craven Community College when they will host Dr. Valerie Johnson as she presents "The Harlowe Patriots". It's a little known but important piece of American history: black soldiers fighting against the British in the Revolutionary War. It's estimated that 5,000 black soldiers served on the Patriot side during the Revolution, which lasted from 1775 to 1783.Fourteen free men of color from the Harlowe community of Havelock fought in key battles of the war, with General George Washington leading the fight for independence. Join Dr. Johnson as she reveals this important story and its connection to us today.
